F1 Fans Choose Their Ultimate World Cup Team as Hamilton, Verstappen and Russell Make the Starting XI

*F1 Fans Choose Their Ultimate World Cup Team as Hamilton, Verstappen and Russell Make the Starting XI*

By Alex Christian | MBCF News— June 21, 2026

With excitement building for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Formula 1 fans decided to have some fun. They imagined what would happen if today’s F1 grid traded racing for football and voted on the Formula 1 app to pick their “F1 World Cup” squad. The result? A lineup mixing world champions, rising stars, veterans, and fan favorites.

_Editor’s note: This team is based on a fan poll and is for entertainment purposes only._

The choices say a lot about how fans see the drivers. It’s not just about racing skill — personality, leadership, and teamwork all played a part.

*Goalkeeper: George Russell (Mercedes)*
Fans picked Russell for his height, quick reactions, and decision-making. He’s also seen as a natural leader who could organize the defense when pressure mounts.

*Full-backs: Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin)*
Two of the sport’s most experienced drivers. Fans pointed to their race intelligence and ability to read situations — qualities that translate well to the pitch.

*Centre-backs: Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber)*
Verstappen brings the fighter mentality and relentless drive to win. Hulkenberg is known to be a big football fan and brings physicality. Together, fans think they’d be tough to break down.

*Midfield: Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Lando Norris (McLaren)*
Both are proven under pressure on track. In midfield, they’d add energy, technical skill, and composure in tight spaces.

*Attacking midfield: Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes)*
Despite his age, Antonelli’s maturity and talent stood out to voters. Fans see him as a playmaker who could create scoring chances.

*Forwards: Carlos Sainz (Williams), Oscar Piastri (McLaren), and Pierre Gasly (Alpine)*
Sainz is a known football fanatic with real ability on the ball. Piastri gets the nod for his calmness under pressure. Gasly’s competitiveness makes him an ideal forward who’d chase every ball.

*The Bench*
Oliver Bearman (Haas) was voted backup goalkeeper. Sergio Perez (Red Bull) brings veteran experience. Young talents Arvid Lindblad, Gabriel Bortoleto, Isack Hadjar, and Franco Colapinto were picked to add fresh energy.

*Manager: Toto Wolff (Mercedes)*
Fans chose Wolff for his leadership and motivational skills, traits that have defined Mercedes’ success in F1.

This squad is all in good fun, but it reflects how fans connect with drivers beyond the cockpit. World champions, rookies, and big personalities all made the cut. If this team ever played, it’d be chaos — and probably brilliant to watch.

What do you think of the F1 World Cup XI? Agree with the fan vote, or would you make changes? Let us know.

FIA Admits Error in Piastri-Leclerc Incident and Announces Penalty Rule Change By Alex Christian| MBCF News_July 25, 2026 The FIA has agreed to change how penalties are applied after admitting McLaren driver Oscar Piastri was unfairly treated during his clash with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc at the Belgian Grand Prix. On his way to a fifth-place finish, Piastri was attacking Leclerc for a podium position at Les Combes when the pair made contact. Piastri sustained floor damage to his car. Leclerc was investigated but received no penalty. Following a meeting between drivers and FIA stewards, it was agreed that similar incidents in the future will be penalized. The new consensus is that squeezing a rival on corner entry will result in a five-second penalty. The FIA also agreed to show more leniency for incidents that occur immediately after safety car restarts. Quotes: Oscar Piastri, over team radio:   “He didn’t leave enough space.
