Max Verstappen to McLaren: Zak Brown Addresses 2026 Transfer Speculation

Max Verstappen to McLaren: Zak Brown Addresses 2026 Transfer Speculation

By Alex Christian | MBCF News — June 30, 2026

Speculation surrounding Max Verstappen's Formula One future has continued to dominate headlines, but McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has played down suggestions that the four-time world champion could be heading to the Woking-based team.

Rumours about Verstappen's long-term future have intensified throughout the 2026 season as Red Bull has struggled to consistently match the pace of its main rivals. Although the Dutch driver remains one of the sport's biggest stars and continues to produce impressive performances, questions have been raised about whether he will remain with Red Bull beyond his current contract.

During a series of radio interviews ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Brown was asked directly whether McLaren had any plans to pursue Verstappen if the opportunity arose.

Brown made it clear that McLaren is fully committed to its current driver pairing of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

"We have two outstanding racing drivers, and we expect them to be with us for a long time," Brown said, dismissing speculation that the team is preparing for a major driver change.

While rejecting the rumours, Brown admitted that Verstappen remains one of the finest talents in Formula One and acknowledged that any team would naturally respect a driver of his quality.

He explained that successful teams are always aware of developments in the driver market but stressed that McLaren is not actively looking to replace either Norris or Piastri.

According to Brown, McLaren's focus remains on building around its existing lineup rather than making blockbuster moves.

The comments come after another wave of reports linked Verstappen with several top teams following an inconsistent campaign for Red Bull. Despite finishing second at the Austrian Grand Prix, Red Bull has not enjoyed the same level of dominance that defined previous seasons, leading to increased speculation about Verstappen's future.

Adding to the uncertainty, Verstappen has previously admitted that the major Formula One regulation changes introduced for 2026 could influence how long he stays in the sport. While he has not confirmed any plans to leave Red Bull, his comments have encouraged ongoing discussion about where he could race in the future.

For McLaren, stability appears to be the priority. Norris and Piastri have helped establish the team as one of Formula One's strongest competitors over recent seasons, and Brown believes maintaining that partnership is the best path forward.

Analysis

Although Brown firmly rejected the idea of signing Verstappen, his comments also reflected the reality of Formula One. Elite teams constantly monitor the driver market because situations can change quickly.

Verstappen remains one of the most valuable drivers on the grid, and if he ever became available, interest from several leading teams would be inevitable. However, based on Brown's latest remarks, McLaren is showing no indication that it intends to disrupt the successful partnership it has built with Norris and Piastri.

Unless Red Bull's competitive situation deteriorates significantly over the coming months, there is currently little concrete evidence that Verstappen is preparing to make a move.

With the British Grand Prix approaching, attention is expected to shift back to the championship battle on track, but questions about Verstappen's long-term future are unlikely to disappear anytime soon.

As Formula One enters a new era under the 2026 regulations, driver market speculation will continue to be one of the biggest talking points across the paddock.

FIA Admits Error in Piastri-Leclerc Incident and Announces Penalty Rule Change

FIA Admits Error in Piastri-Leclerc Incident and Announces Penalty Rule Change By Alex Christian| MBCF News_July 25, 2026 The FIA has agreed to change how penalties are applied after admitting McLaren driver Oscar Piastri was unfairly treated during his clash with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc at the Belgian Grand Prix. On his way to a fifth-place finish, Piastri was attacking Leclerc for a podium position at Les Combes when the pair made contact. Piastri sustained floor damage to his car. Leclerc was investigated but received no penalty. Following a meeting between drivers and FIA stewards, it was agreed that similar incidents in the future will be penalized. The new consensus is that squeezing a rival on corner entry will result in a five-second penalty. The FIA also agreed to show more leniency for incidents that occur immediately after safety car restarts. Quotes: Oscar Piastri, over team radio:   “He didn’t leave enough space.
