Wyndham Clark Addresses 2016 Social Media Post About Baker Mayfield

Two-time U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark has explained the story behind a 2016 social media post that resurfaced online, saying it came from a personal situation during his college years rather than a rivalry with NFL quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Clark discussed the topic during an appearance on Barstool Sports’ _Pardon My Take_ podcast. The hosts brought up an old post where Clark wrote, “I hate Baker Mayfield.” He initially hesitated before deciding to address it on air.
According to Clark, the post was linked to a relationship issue while he was playing college golf. He said the comment reflected how he felt at the time, but it was not based on anything Mayfield did as an athlete or public figure.
Clark made it clear that he does not hold any grudge now. He said he respects Mayfield’s career and views him positively. “I’m a Baker fan now,” Clark said during the podcast. He noted that reactions from years ago do not always reflect how a person feels later.
The golfer did not provide names or additional details about the situation. He also asked that the focus stay on the present rather than on a post from nearly a decade ago.
College timelines and career paths
In 2016, Clark was competing in college golf. He started at Oklahoma State before transferring to the University of Oregon. Around the same period, Mayfield was the starting quarterback for Oklahoma. Mayfield later won the Heisman Trophy and was selected first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Both athletes have since moved on to high-profile professional careers in different sports. Clark has become one of the top names on the PGA Tour, while Mayfield continues to play in the NFL.
Recent golf success and personal reset
Clark’s comments come after he won his second U.S. Open title, adding to his resume of major championships. The 31-year-old has also been working to reset his public image following an incident after the 2025 U.S. Open.
At that time, Clark acknowledged damaging property at Oakmont Country Club. He later apologized, paid for repairs, made a charitable donation, and completed counseling. The club reinstated him after those steps.
After his most recent major victory, Clark said he regrets his actions from last year and is focused on moving forward. He said he hopes to earn back trust from fans and show a different side of his career.
Off-course updates
Away from competition, Clark confirmed he is in a relationship with Emily Tanner, a model and entrepreneur. Tanner joined him as his caddie during the Masters Par 3 Contest, and Clark has described her as a positive influence during tournaments.
Mayfield has been married to his wife, Emily Mayfield, since 2019. He continues his NFL career while staying active in community and team activities.
