The sport entered a new technical era in 2026, bringing revised regulations and Cadillac onto the grid as Formula 1’s 11th team.
The competitive order was unclear during pre-season testing, but Mercedes immediately emerged as the team to beat at the Australian Grand Prix.
George Russell and Antonelli finished first and second in Melbourne, ahead of the Ferraris, giving Mercedes an early advantage.
That advantage, however, has been challenged as the season progressed. McLaren eventually secured its first victory of the year at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Lando Norris took the win.
Antonelli makes F1 history
Antonelli has been one of the biggest stories of the season after establishing himself at the top of the Drivers’ Championship.
The Mercedes driver claimed his maiden Grand Prix victory in Shanghai before producing a run of five consecutive wins.
His performances also saw him become the youngest-ever driver to lead the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.
Antonelli moved into first place in the standings at the Japanese Grand Prix at the age of 19 years, 7 months and 4 days.
The teenager has faced setbacks during the season, including a mechanical failure that forced him to retire in Barcelona. He also dropped out of the points at the British Grand Prix following a reliability problem.
Despite those setbacks, Antonelli has remained at the top of the championship.
His closest challenger is Lewis Hamilton, who trails by 50 points, while Mercedes team-mate Russell is another nine points behind Hamilton in third.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has praised Antonelli’s development, saying the teenager has learned from the “tough learnings” of his rookie season.
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has also praised the young Mercedes star.
Hamilton secures first Ferrari victory
Hamilton’s move to Ferrari produced a major breakthrough in 2026 when the seven-time world champion claimed his first victory for the Italian team.
The Briton had already recorded podium finishes in China, Canada and Monaco, including consecutive second-place finishes in Canada and Monaco.
But his biggest moment came at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Hamilton took control of the race and eventually crossed the finish line 19.561 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger to secure his maiden victory with Ferrari.
The victory was also Hamilton’s first since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix.
It marked a significant moment in his Ferrari career after he finished the previous season without a podium, the first time in his F1 career that he had gone an entire campaign without finishing in the top three.
Asked where the Ferrari victory ranked among his 106 career wins, Hamilton described it as “something else”.
Driver-market speculation begins early
The 2026 season has also produced plenty of speculation about driver changes and team relationships.
In May, Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu strongly rejected reports of a possible fallout with Esteban Ocon.
Komatsu dismissed the reports as “absolute bull****”.
Valtteri Bottas was also forced to respond to speculation about his position at Cadillac after social media rumours suggested his seat could be under threat.
The Finnish driver said: “I know my situation, the team knows my situation, and they support me 100%, so that’s why from my side it was okay in the end.”
Verstappen’s future has also generated speculation, with reports suggesting discussions involving his management and McLaren CEO Zak Brown.
McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella rejected suggestions that Oscar Piastri could be involved in a direct driver swap with Verstappen, while Piastri’s manager, Mark Webber, also dismissed the idea.
Aston Martin face major fight to recover
Aston Martin have endured one of the most difficult starts to the 2026 season.
The team experienced problems before and during pre-season testing, with the AMR26 arriving late for the Barcelona Shakedown before encountering further difficulties in Bahrain.
Chronic vibrations affected both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll during the Australian season opener, limiting the number of laps they could complete.
Although Honda found solutions to the vibration problem, Aston Martin continued to face a significant performance deficit compared with its rivals.
The team chose to delay a major upgrade package until the Hungarian Grand Prix rather than introduce a series of smaller updates throughout the season.
The initial results from the upgrade were encouraging, with Alonso describing the second half of the campaign as potentially a “new start of the championship”.
Aston Martin are expected to introduce further chassis developments, while an upgraded Honda power unit is planned for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
The team will now look to build on the progress shown in Hungary when Formula 1 returns from its summer break.
ANALYSIS
Formula 1’s opening 11 rounds have shown just how unpredictable the sport’s new era can be. Mercedes began the season with a clear advantage, but the competitive picture has changed as rivals have improved. McLaren’s victory in Hungary is an indication that the battle may become even tighter after the summer break.
Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead is arguably the biggest development. At only 19, he has already demonstrated the consistency and speed needed to challenge experienced drivers. His 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton gives Mercedes a strong position, although reliability remains an important concern after Antonelli’s previous setbacks.
Hamilton’s first Ferrari victory is another major turning point. After a difficult first season with the team, winning in Barcelona could provide significant momentum for the remainder of the campaign.
Aston Martin’s situation is more complicated. Their Hungarian upgrades offered encouragement, but the team still has substantial ground to recover. The planned chassis developments and Honda power-unit upgrade could determine whether they can become regular contenders again.
Overall, the second half of 2026 promises an intense fight involving Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari and potentially a recovering Aston Martin.
